OUR VERDICT

The Gozney Tread is a game-changer for those who believe that a life well-lived involves both adventure and excellent food. Portable, powerful, and built with the kind of rugged elegance that suggests it could survive both an Alpine blizzard and a family camping trip, it’s the outdoor oven that proves you can have your pizza – and eat it – wherever the trail might lead.

WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR

When it comes to outdoor cooking, I’m after more than just fuel for the day ahead. I want theatre. I want smoke. I want that primal satisfaction of turning raw ingredients into something glorious under the open sky. But I’m also a practical soul – lightweight, durable kit that won’t take up half the boot space is essential. The Tread promised all that, with a dash of Gozney’s signature design flair.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Out of the box, the Tread is a handsome beast – all matte black, brushed steel, and purposeful angles. It’s compact without feeling flimsy, and you get the sense that it’s been built by people who actually cook outdoors, not just design kit for people who like the idea of cooking outdoors. There’s the same attention to detail and experience you get from Apple as you sift product from packaging too.

THE TEST

Over a few weeks of testing – from quick midweek backyard dinners to a windswept weekend on the South Downs – the Tread proved itself a trusty companion. The heat-up time is quick (a boon when the sun’s setting and the kids are circling like wolves), and the 500°C max temperature makes short work of pizzas. It’s not just for dough, either – I seared lamb chops, blistered aubergines, and even fired off a breakfast flatbread one morning, feeling smug as hell as the neighbours tucked into their soggy cereal.

WHO IS THIS ITEM FOR?

The Gozney Tread is for those who like their adventures with a side of culinary ambition. If you’re the sort who thinks a campfire sausage in a bun is perfectly fine, this might be overkill. But if you’re the type to carry a pouch of Maldon sea salt in your pack, the Tread will feel like a soulmate. You’re going to need wheels. No one is carrying this very far by hand and so the most likely customer is an ‘advanturer’ rather than just an adventurer. But this is an increasingly growing side bar of the adventure market so no doubt many head will be turned.

WHAT STANDS OUT?

Performance

Equipped with a lateral gas burner, the Tread reaches a scorching 500°C, allowing you to achieve that coveted leopard-spotted crust in under 60 seconds. The 12mm removable cordierite stone ensures even heat distribution, resulting in a perfectly crisp base

Ease of Use

One of the Tread’s standout features is its plug-and-play design. Requiring no assembly, it comes equipped with a 1.2m gas hose and regulator, burner guard, stone adjustment tool, and a digital manual. Simply connect it to a propane gas source, and you’re ready to unleash your inner pizzaiolo. The oven’s rapid cool-down time is particularly advantageous for the itinerant chef, allowing for swift packing and movement post-feast.

Accessories

Gozney offers a suite of accessories tailored for the Tread, including the Venture Stand, Venture Bag, Roof Rack, Roof Rack Server, Mantel, and specialised peels for pizza placement and turning. These are absolutely essential and you must turn your pizza every 15 secs or so or you’ll blacken the skies around the camp never mind the oven itself. These additions are pricey again but they do enhance the overall cooking experience, providing added versatility and convenience.

Design and Portability

The Tread is impressive engineering, boasting external dimensions of 418mm in width, 484mm in depth, and 320mm in height. Its internal cooking chamber measures 310mm by 380mm, with a height of 150mm, providing ample space to craft a 12-inch pizza. Thoughtful touches like the removable stone and easy clean-down are very welcome also.

VALUE FOR MONEY

At £499, the Tread isn’t cheap – mediocre meals when you’re deep in the wild have their emotional cost too. This is an oven built to last, and it will repay its price many times over in sheer joy of cooking and the happy, smiling faces around you.

BASE BOTTOM LINE

If your idea of outdoor cooking is a burnt sausage and a tin of beans, the Gozney Tread will feel like bringing a flamethrower to a tea light party – brilliant, but entirely unnecessary. If, however, your outdoor adventures demand the sort of meals that would make Yotam Ottolenghi nod approvingly from the next tent over, then this little oven will change the way you cook outside forever – and might just ruin instant noodles for you in the process. Sorry, noodles.
